The Mideast Domino Theory as described by Iran itself...

Iran Warns Attack on Them would Lead to Mideast "Domino Effect"
November 22, 2007 - At a seminar held Thursday on Iran's nuclear program, Iranian chief nuclear negotiator announced that an attack from Western countries on the region's nuclear facilities would cause a "domino effect" on other countries in the Middle East.
Quote:
Although there was no elaborate explanation on exactly what that "effect" would be, Saeed Jalili did emphasize the influence that Iran holds on neighboring countries, such as Iraq. "World powers are now aware of Iran's effective role global security, playing with Iran's security would have a domino effect," said Saeel, head of the Supreme National Security Council.

He then added, "Our role in Afghanistan and Iraq is in direction with peace, stability and improving governments there," as Xinhua quoted. Iran, who had been smuggling weapons into Iraq to be used by its soldiers, has been seemingly stemming the flow of armament into the nation, gaining rare praise from the United States.

And although the nation continuously denied it, there is speculation of Iran supporting local insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran has been under scrutiny from the UN watchdog IAEA, who has filed a report saying that although Iran still needs to give answers to key questions regarding its nuclear development program, the country has shown willingness to cooperate with the IAEA's investigation.

IAEA head Mohammed El Baradei has announced that despite the lack of complete information, and of Iran's "diminishing" involvement in the investigation, he is determined to give more time to the nation, convinced that they will eventually achieve the desired progress. "El Baradei wants to get across that Iran has shown real willingness to cooperate and we are making important progress, so let's stick with it," the Telegraph quoted a Vienna-based diplomat.

Iran Refuses To Hold Talks With EU On Halting Uranium Enrichment
November 27, 2007 The Iranian government has adamantly refused to hold discussions regarding the proposed halting of its uranium enrichment program, during its talks with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.
Quote:
The EU has attempted to hold talks with Iran in the hopes of easing the building tension regarding the actual and potential purpose of Tehran's nuclear program. Gholam Hossei Elham, the spokesman for the Iranian government, identified the halting of their uranium enrichment to be "a step backward and [it] is not the agenda of the talks."

Elham added that the halting of the uranium enrichment would be to violate the rights that the nation and its people have. "The Islamic republic has clear rights and it is a principle to preserve its rights," Elham said. "It is a principle not to accept unlawful commitments and impositions." Solana is expected to give feedback to the U.N. Secretary Council regarding Iran's response to the uranium halting proposal. The feedback will likely be the determining factor in whether or not Iran would be served with a third set of sanctions.

Iran has been accused by the U.S. of actively enriching uranium to secretly create nuclear weapons. Tehran has continuously denied these allegations, insisting that their nuclear program is merely to obtain nuclear power.

So much for diplomacy...

Iran nuclear negotiations at a standstill
Friday 30th November, 2007 - The European Union's top nuclear negotiator has failed to produce a breakthrough with Iran.
Quote:
Javier Solana and Iranian envoy Saeed Jalili were not able to agree on conditions for Iranian nuclear power prior to a deadline for the EU representative to report back on the issue. The talks were seen as a last chance for Tehran before a possible new round of sanctions, though hopes of a breakthrough had been slim.

Mr Solana said he would remain in contact with his Iranian counterpart but said it had become obvious Tehran was not willing to curb its nuclear plans. The Iranian envoy said UN pressure would not stop Iran from mastering uranium enrichment and said it was unacceptable to prevent the country from doing so.

Western nations fear Iran is using its nuclear program to develop a nuclear bomb. The United States and its allies are pressing for stronger UN sanctions against Tehran.

Iran tryin' to make a nuclear bomb...

Iran on Way to Atomic Bomb Capability: ElBaradei
September 26, 2008 - IAEA Chief Says Iran Is On Way To Mastering Technology To Create Atomic Bombs
Quote:
Iran is on its way to mastering technology that would enable it to build atomic bombs, if it so chose, International Atomic Energy Agency director Mohamed ElBaradei said in remarks published on Friday. Iran says its uranium-enrichment program is only for civilian purposes -- electricity generation -- but is under IAEA investigation and U.N. sanctions over past undeclared activity and failure to prove its intentions are wholly peaceful.

ElBaradei said having nuclear arms unfortunately still symbolized prestige and power, tempting nations with security worries to at least develop the potential for a bomb through the "dual use" enrichment process. Beyond seven confirmed nuclear weapons powers, there is a wide range of countries with access to components -- fissile material or the equipment to produce it -- that could give them an atomic bomb "in a matter of months or a year," he said.

Asked by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily if Iran was also on its way to "virtual" nuclear-weapons power status, he said: "That is correct." But he added Tehran could not "break out" to a bomb as long IAEA monitors remained at its nuclear sites. Iran has pledged to maintain regular IAEA inspections, but these are limited to a few declared facilities.
