UK teachers union says sex with some pupils should be allowed
Sunday 5th October, 2008 - A UK school union leader has said teachers should not be prosecuted for having affairs with older pupils.
Quote:
Chris Keates of the NASUWT union has said an anomaly exists whereby teachers who have sex with an over-16 pupil are put on the sex offenders register. She told ITV's Tonight program the law was wrong because a teacher could legally enter a relationship with a sixth former at another school.

Ms Keates said the abuse of trust law, which says it is illegal for teachers to engage in sexual activity with pupils at their school aged under 18, had gone too far in cases where a pupil had reached the age of consent. Child protection professionals have criticised her comments and have said teachers are in a position of trust and breaching that trust is wrong.

Ms Keates in a later interview with the BBC advised members of her union they should strive to keep relationships professional at all times. She added: "Any teacher or adult who works in schools who sexually abuses a pupil of any age should face the full legal consequences." A Sheffield University study recently suggested as many as 1,500 intimate relationships develop every year at high schools in the UK.
