Rutgers sings Brian's song
Brian Leonard stood atop the podium, a sword in one hand and a football in the other as he conducted the Rutgers band for the first - and final - time of his magical career.
Just moments earlier, on what was to be Rutgers' last play of the game, Leonard, the senior who endured dismal seasons in Piscataway before enjoying the program's meteoric rise to national prominence this fall, had scored on a 2-yard run with eight seconds to play.
The play not only put the capper on Rutgers' 38-7 home victory over Syracuse, but it also crowned him as the school's all-time leading scorer.
No wonder the rugged senior fullback was emotional after the game.
"After the game, when I got up on the podium to conduct the band, I had tears in my eyes," said Leonard, whose 266 career points vaulted him ahead of kicker Kennan Starzell's 261 for the most by a Scarlet Knight. "This was a great feeling to take the seniors out with a win."
