Patriotism is to love one's country and I believe that all three candidates do love America. Some people who love America just as much as the next guy aren't that good at symbolic patriotism. They don't buy "I Support the Troop" bumper stickers or wear flag pins, etc. But they do care deeply for the citizens and the spirit of America. They may, like Obama, look at the goal of a better America in an analytic and logical fashion, seeing the good and bad. Of course, this type of patriotism doesn't play well on TV or in soundbites or pictures. Obama, being new to this, probably doesn't really understand how to play the political patriotism game as well as McCain and Clinton does, thus making his version of patriotism a target. Personally, I would rather have someone who cares more about the economy, health care, etc, than someone who ignores all this, but wears a flag pin. But unfortunately politics is all about image than substance, so even the slightest fault of patriotism can ruin a candidate.
As far as Bill Clinton's speech, I am always flabbergasted that he would sabotage his party's chances if his wife doesn't win. This is the second or third time the Clintons have practically endorsed McCain over Obama. I guess if they can't have it, they don't want any other democrat to have it either.
Perhaps they should just forget the whole election and have McCain-Clinton in 08.
