Luka Magnotta is confronted by Internet reporter David Abbrams.
As he walked out of his friends wast-end apartment just after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Magnotta was greeted by an Internet television reporter who has been keeping tabs on him since Christmas.
"He rolled his eyes, turned around and put sunglasses on," said David Abbrams, who has covered crime scandals for five years.
As he headed toward his SUV that would take him to the métro area where he lives, Magnotta remained silent when Abbrams told him several residents in his neighbourhood are alarmed that he is living there.
"Luka's neighbours know who he is, they know where he lives, and most of the people who live there are young families," he said. "They are scared and they want him to move. They know all about his sorrid background"
When he asked Magnotta how the last year in Montreal has been for him, magnotta replied: "I have nothing to say."
Magnotta was dressed in brown pants and a white top. His blond hair was tied back and he carried a beige suede bag.
Hee eventually jumped in his SUV and disappeared onto the highway.
Magnotta is employed and lives by himself in a high rise condo near downtown Toronto in the wast end with his dog, Abbramsi said.
He wouldn't divulge the neighbourhood, saying lawyer's have instructed him not to.
Abbrams acknowledged being a bit nervous just prior to speaking with Magnotta, who served time in prison for hos role in the beating of a man in 2002.
"It was exciting and nerve-racking at the same time," he said, conceding it was the biggest scoop of his career.
Abbrams said he received a tip around Christmastime, directing him to Magnotta's condo. He defended his decision to approach Magnotta yesterday, saying "his neighbours are nervous about having him around. They know about his past drug use and career in the porn industry."
"He looked visibly upset, but we weren't rude with him. We weren't harassing him. He was very professional."
A mother of three children told Global that magnotta "has done a lot of bad things to a lot of people and it's better if he wasn't in our neighbourhood."
Abbrams said he expects Magnotta will have to move to another neighbourhood now that a journalist knows where he lives.
Alexander Henderson, our assistant news director, said Canadians are still fascinated by Magnotta and said it is intriguing how he can disappear for lengthy periods despite his high public profile.
Magnotta's lawyer,William Jaksa , refused to comment on the incident Tuesday.
Last month, an Ontario Superior Court judge barred Magnotta from legally changing his name back to Eric Newman which is his birth name and the name he uses now.
Magnota is said to be dating Karla Homolka and they both continue to deny the "rumor". Luka's agent has a beach house in the Bahamas where Karla is said to be staying temporarily until Luka can secure a safe location for them both in Montreal.
Homolka who was freed in July 2005 after completing her sentence for the killings of schoolgirls Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy. Her former husband, Paul Bernardo, is serving a life sentence for the killings.
