Woman poised to lead Navajo Nation
29 Oct.`10 - Navajo tribe member Lynda Lovejoy says she is ready to make history.
Quote:
The New Mexico state senator is running in Tuesday's election for president of the Navajo Nation, the largest American Indian nation in the USA. Her campaign is the closest any woman has come to heading the 300,000-member nation, which spreads across parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. "More traditional people are coming to embrace women leaders and put their faith in women," says Lovejoy, 51.

The contest has been bruising, marked by questions about Lovejoy's ability to govern, concerns that a female candidacy has upset the balance of nature and Internet accusations of drunkenness. Most recently, the campaign was rocked by corruption charges against her opponent, Ben Shelly, the current vice president, and his running mate, Rex Lee Jim, a delegate to the tribal council.

"People today don't know who to vote for. It's neck and neck," says George Hardeen, spokesman for current president Joe Shirley Jr. "With (the charges) coming out 13 days before the election, it would seem to work in Ms. Lovejoy's favor. However, this is Navajo land and it doesn't always play out that way." Both candidates say they want to create jobs, improve roads and access to water, and boost education.

Study shows that women are stronger than men after all
Mon, Nov 01, 2010 - Women live longer than men because their bodies are better at repairing themselves. In an article in this month’s Scientific American, Tom Kirkwood of Newcastle University, England, argues that women have to be better at fixing the wear and tear on their cells to have healthy offspring.
Quote:
In interviews last week, Kirkwood said it made biological sense for men to be more disposable and therefore die younger. The body is disposable, said Kirkwood, because the genes are passed to the next generation. “This theory is widely accepted now,” Kirkwood said. “Aging is not driven by a clock.”

Aging is regulated by genes that specify the levels of maintenance that repair the damage to cells. Much of this damage is inevitable and caused by free radicals, a byproduct of the chemical reactions in cells that produce energy. This damage may injure the cells’ DNA or their membrane, which need to be repaired. Some of the damage is caused by external factors, such as smoking. However, in Kirkwood’s theory, aging is not pre-programmed because the genes that repair cells can be modified.

The gap between men’s and women’s life expectancy has actually been closing in the UK and is now 4.2 years (a narrowing from six years over the past 27 years). A boy born in the UK today lives to an average 77.7 years, compared with a girl, who would be expected to reach 81.9. The differential is thought to be because of higher rates of heart disease and risk-taking in men; oestrogens have protected women from heart disease.

However, this would still fit with Kirkwood’s theory because these factors could influence how the maintenance genes are expressed. “It’s important to understand what influences longevity — how much is societal and could it disappear?” said Kirkwood, who believes biology dictates it can never disappear. “This theory matters when we are discussing things such as when women should start their pensions.” “For a long time, we’ve had a paternalistic attitude that women are the weaker sex,” Kirkwood said.

Female orgasm 'overwhelms'
November 08, 2010 - THE brain's reward circuits and rational thought processes are overwhelmed with electrical activity when a woman reaches sexual climax.
Quote:
In the first film of what goes on inside a woman's brain as she approaches and then experiences orgasm, researchers recorded how sexual arousal generates a cascade of events that, at its peak, involves 30 parts of the brain. A woman not only experiences longer and deeper orgasms than a man, but they so overwhelm her nervous system that they leave her temporarily impervious to pain, the film shows.

"In women, orgasm produces a very extensive response across the brain and body," said Barry Komisaruk, professor of psychology at Rutgers University in New Jersey, who oversaw the research. Professor Komisaruk and his colleagues plan to show their film this month at Neuroscience 2010, a conference organised by the US Society for Neuroscience.

In their research they asked 16 women to "self-stimulate" until they achieved orgasm, while lying under a blanket in a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Despite the clinical surroundings, all the women were able to achieve their goal, mostly in less than five minutes -- although some took up to 20.

The scientists used the machine to observe which parts of the brain became active at each phase. The film, based on images taken of the women's brains every two seconds, shows the surges in electrical activity as an orgasm overwhelms different combinations of brain areas in turn. They flood not only the brain's "reward circuits" but also the parts associated with rational thought.

Women showin' their bulgy bellies - and more...

What's with all the naked pregnant ladies?
Wednesday, Nov 10, 2010 - Model Miranda Kerr joins a long list of expectant moms, not all of them famous, who have eagerly taken it off
Quote:
Another day, another famous woman posing naked while pregnant. This time it's Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr with her seven-month baby bump in the December issue of W magazine.

In a bold move, the 28-year-old has rejected the classic arm-over-swollen-boobs pose immortalized by Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair. Instead, Kerr lovingly embraces her belly and makes no pretense of covering up. The black-and-white shot conveys all of the natural beauty and wonder of pregnancy ... by way of a superhumanly beautiful woman with nary a stretch mark. But regardless! It's an exquisite photo that reminds us that pregnancy is, um, one of the most awesome things ever? I mean, there is a baby growing inside her -- how amazing is that? Perhaps that kind of stupefied stoner-like talk is part of what is behind the trend of naked pregnant celebrities. We love to see stars humanized by the common experiences of we plebes; a bulging pregnant belly certainly does that and, at the same time, it taps into something seemingly transcendent and extraordinary. Or maybe we just like seeing naked female celebrities any way we can. It's probably a bit of both.

Naked pregnant chicks weren't always considered so acceptable, though. Back in 1991, Demi's Vanity Fair issue was sheathed in paper bags and banned from some newsstands. Since then, countless famous women have followed her lead: Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Heidi Klum, Milla Jovovich, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, to name a few. Plenty more have shown off their swollen bellies without taking off their clothes -- take Brooke Shields in a wet, curve-hugging dress on the cover of Vogue's Shape issue, or a very pregnant Kourtney Kardashian walking red carpets in skin-tight mini-dresses. A New York Times piece on the trendiness (seriously) of pregnancy in 2006 observed that it was "only a half dozen years ago that expectancy was viewed primarily as an awkward condition to be borne with what grace one could muster" and that "today women flaunt their pregnancies, take them public on Web sites and blogs and show them off with low-slung jeans, slinky tunics and dresses that mimic those on the runways."

Indeed, the "pregnancy porn," as Rebecca Traister once called it, isn't limited to celebrity glossies. There is a whole professional industry for maternity photo shoots, the results of which are displayed everywhere from living rooms to Facebook, and women even document their growing stomachs in mind-blowing time-lapse videos. Not everyone is happy about this development. In a recent episode of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," Bruce Jenner was made a wee bit uncomfortable by a photo his wife hung up in the couple's bedroom of daughter Kourtney re-creating the famous Leibovitz image: "That's a nude shot of my daughter Kourtney," he said. "Why have that in here? Is it art?" The short answer: Yes. Some might see all this self-documentation as a sad symbol of narcissistic Web culture and celebrity mimicry. Indeed, so many meaningless aspects of our lives are obsessively photographed and broadcast online. But if ever there was something worth documenting and sharing with the world, this -- the complete and total transformation of a woman's body as she brings a mini person into the world -- would be it.

Uncle Ferd don't think dey's dat easy...

Are white girls really 'easy meat'?
08 Jan 2011 - Jack Straw, the former Home Secretary, claims that some Pakistani men see young white women as prime targets for sexual grooming. Is he right, asks Andrew Gilligan
Quote:
If you want an example of the official “conspiracy of silence” that has allegedly allowed hundreds of vulnerable white girls in some towns to be abused by Asian men, the case of Ajmal Mohammed, a 43-year-old from Blackburn, might seem to be it. In 2004, Mohammed, an amateur cricketer in the Ribblesdale league, took a schoolgirl to a Manchester hotel room and got her drunk – to celebrate, he said, her 14th birthday. The child ran away. Police were called, but he denied having sex with her and they issued him with a “child abduction warning letter”. He was never prosecuted. Two years later, Mohammed took another 14-year-old to a hotel room, this time in Blackpool – and this time he raped her. When the police came for him, they found the numbers of six other vulnerable youngsters on his mobile phone.

In industrial towns across the North and the Midlands, over the past three years, at least 51 people have been convicted in trials involving groups of men who have picked up young girls for sexual exploitation. Forty-eight of the offenders were Asian; the vast majority of the victims were white. Last week, in Derby, nine men, eight of them Asian, were sentenced for their parts in a gang that groomed, sexually exploited and in some cases raped 27 local children, 22 of them white. The issue exploded on to the national agenda on Friday after Jack Straw, the former Home Secretary who is also MP for Blackburn, said that in his town, some Pakistani men saw white girls as “easy meat”. There was, he said, “a specific problem of Pakistani-heritage men who target vulnerable young white girls, and we need to get the Pakistani community to think much more clearly about why this is going on and about the problems that are leading to a number of Pakistani-heritage men thinking it’s OK to target white girls in this way”.

Many other figures involved in this field have fought shy. Martin Narey, the chief executive of Barnardo’s, initially described the evidence as merely “anecdotal”. A Channel 4 documentary on the subject in 2004 was pulled at the request of police. Few experts were willing to talk openly yesterday. Yet as early as 2006, Blackburn’s local paper, the Lancashire Telegraph, launched a “Keep Them Safe” campaign to make the authorities tackle what it called “sexual grooming and abduction […] which predominantly involves Asian men”. In article after article, the paper charted locals’ frustration at officialdom’s reluctance to get involved: in 2007, it reported, the parents of some victims even threatened to sue the police for their failure to act. The editor, Kevin Young, said: “This is an extremely sensitive subject, and the Telegraph gave it a lot of consideration before launching its campaign.”

Chemical Signal in Women's Tears a Turnoff for Men
Thursday, January 06, 2011 - Washington - If a crying woman's red nose isn't a big enough turnoff to a man, a surprising experiment found another reason: Tears of sadness may temporarily lower his testosterone level. Those tears send a chemical signal as the man gets close enough to sniff them - even though there's no discernible odor, say researchers from Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science.
Quote:
It's the first such signal to be found in tears, and it's probably not unique to women's. Theirs just were the first to be studied. "It's hard to get men to volunteer to cry" in a lab, noted Weizmann neurobiologist Noam Sobel, senior author of the study appearing in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

Emotional tears are chemically different from the reflex tears that form when you get dust in your eye. But biologists have long puzzled over the true function of emotional tears: Are they merely cathartic, or do they have some other physiological role?

Mice can produce a sort of tear that contains a pheromone, an odorless molecule that triggers basic instincts in many animals. So Sobel's team tested whether human tears similarly can convey subliminal chemical signals through the nose. After all, we tend to hug a crying loved one, putting our nose near their tears.

Actress Glenn Close Upset About Her Image Being Used in Lewd Navy Video
Wednesday, January 05, 2011 -- Actress Glenn Close is speaking out about appearing briefly in one of the raunchy comedy videos made by a senior officer on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier a few years ago.
Quote:
The award-winning actress said she appeared in a video clip after a "seemingly innocent request" made during a visit to the USS Enterprise more than four years ago.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Close called the use of her image deeply offensive and insulting. The Navy permanently removed Capt. Owen Honors from command of the carrier Tuesday for the videos that included anti-gay slurs and sexual innuendo.

In 1995, Close appeared in a TV movie, "Serving in Silence," a true story about Army officer Margarethe Cammermeyer, who was discharged for admitting she was a lesbian.
