Monsoons kill many in SE Asia...

Death toll from South Asian flooding nearly reaches 3,200
Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - The death toll from floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains and snow melt in South Asia since June approached 3,200 Monday as some rivers in India continued to overflow, the government said.
Quote:
In the massive flood plain of the eastern Indian state of Bihar -- one of the worst-hit areas -- the death toll reached nearly 500 with 20 million people affected, the government's disaster management office said on its Web site. More than 800,000 people were still housed in government shelters and thousands of boats were being used to rescue people, the office said. The Ganges and other major rivers that run through Bihar continued to surge above the danger mark, the Press Trust of India reported.

Nearly 2,200 people have died in India from the annual monsoon rain floods since June and millions more have been displaced, the Web site said. In neighboring Bangladesh, the worst floods in nearly a decade have claimed 709 lives in the past month, taking the toll since the start of monsoon season to 835, the country's health ministry said. The flood waters in Bangladesh had, however, receded from most of the country's 39 affected districts.

Another 151 people have died in Nepal since June and more than 68,000 families remain affected, home ministry official Ishwar Regmi said Monday. Heavy monsoon rains and snow melt peaked in late July and early August in South Asia, with losses estimated at more than one billion dollars and major outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea posing a health threat.

China flood toll...

Floods Leave 1,138 People Dead, 210 Missing in China This Year
August 29, 2007 - The floods and related disasters have left a total of 1,138 people dead and 210 missing as of said the Ministry of Water Resources at a press conference held on Tuesday.
Quote:
China's Water Resources Minister Chen Lei reported that the death toll so far this year was 50 percent less than the same period over previous years, thanks to effective prevention and control measures and orderly responses. Mountain flash floods claimed 469 lives, while landslides and mud-rock flows killed 409 people, accounting for 41 percent and 36 percent of the death toll respectively, said Vice Water Resources Minister E Jingping.

E said that most of the deaths occurred during the peak rainy season of July and August. Anti-flood facilities and the efficient transfer of civilians have helped 46.152 million residents to avoid flood damage. The timely release of flood alert messages has also prevented 203,000 people from being hurt by high altitude flash flood disasters, Chen said. More than 800,000 people were safely transferred when the Huaihe River experienced great floods this summer. No casualties have been reported, Chen told the press conference.

According to the ministry's statistics, floods in China have incurred 75.9 billion yuan (US$10 billion) of direct economic losses. As of July 21 severe rains and floods affected 139 million people. To date, 5.32 million hectares of crops have been damaged and 883,000 houses have collapsed. National economic losses are down 12.9 percent as compared to figures from the same period over previous years, Chen added.

Flooding in Africa too...

One million affected by Africa floods
September 15, 2007 - Several of Africa's poorest countries are in dire need of assistance due to severe floods that have killed more than 200 people and affected a million in recent weeks, officials have warned.
Quote:
The latest victims were reported in Rwanda, where officials from the northern region said floods killed 15 people and destroyed more than 500 homes since Wednesday. In Sudan, the worst floods in living memory have left 64 people dead and displaced and affected several hundred thousand, mainly in the troubled south, according to the United Nations.

A cholera epidemic spread by floods has also killed at least 49 Sudanese in recent weeks, according to the World Health Organisation. "The response is still ongoing... Most of the 200,000 plus people who were homeless at the end of August have by now been given shelter," Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told AFP.

In neighbouring Uganda, the minister in charge of refugees and disaster preparedness said that 300,000 people were in need of humanitarian assistance. "The situation borders a crisis," Musa Ecweru said. He said nine Ugandans had died as a result of the floods, which he described as "a new phenomenon that we have not experienced for many years."
