Gonna be tought to explain this one...
Maddie's hair 'found in car boot'
September 12, 2007 - Hair 'from body or something used to wrap it'; Sources also say 'fluids in car match Maddie's DNA'
Quote:
PRESSURE on Kate and Gerry McCann is building after a "substantial" amount of their daughter's hair was allegedly found in the boot* of the car they hired more than three weeks after her disappearance. The Daily Mail newspaper in the UK today reported that a "substantial" amount of the four-year-old's hair was found in the car hired more than three weeks after she vanished from the bedroom of her family's holiday unit in Portugal.
The revelation comes days after Gerry and Kate McCann were named as suspects by Portuguese investigators. According to The Daily Mail, Portuguese detectives told the public prosecutor that the only explanation was that the hair came either from Madeleine's body or from something used to wrap it. Sources also told the newspaper that bodily fluids found in the car - not necessarily blood - matched the girl's DNA.
The new report came as detectives handed a 10-volume dossier on Madeleine's disappearance to the public prosecutor. The file has since been delivered to a judge to investigate, prompting speculation the couple may have a case to answer. The judge will will decide if there is enough evidence for either or both Mr and Mrs McCann to be returned to Portugal to stand trial.

Mrs. McCann, with sleeping pills, in the bedroom...
Maddie 'died of sleeping pill overdose'
September 14, 2007 - FORENSIC tests show Madeleine McCann died of an overdose of sleeping pills, media reports said today.
Quote:
Body fluids found in the boot of a car hired by the parents of the missing four-year-old British girl 25 days after she went missing in Portugal showed she had been sedated, according to a French newspaper which said it had seen the evidence. France Soir said DNA results of the fluids showed Maddie had swallowed enough sleeping pills to cause an overdose.
Guilhem Buttut, an investigative reporter for the newspaper, said he had seen "hard evidence" about Madeleine's death in a report now in the hands of Portuguese prosecutors, the metro.co.uk news website reported. Buttut said toxicological tests on the liquids "proved the little girl had ingested medicines, without doubt sleeping pills, in quantities large enough to cause an overdose".
Sources close to the investigation said earlier this week that police discovered an 88 per cent DNA match to Madeleine in the boot of the McCanns' rented Renault Scenic. It was also reported that hair was found in the boot, allegedly showing that her body had been in it.

Affleck delays movie over Maddie case
September 14, 2007 - AMERICAN actor Ben Affleck has delayed the release of his first film as a director because its story line bears a startling resemblance to the case of missing British girl Madeleine McCann.
Quote:
In Gone Baby Gone, a four-year-old girl is abducted while she sleeps after her parents left her by herself. Madeleine, 4 disappeared while asleep in her parents' Portuguese holiday apartment while they ate at a nearby restaurant.
The movie was filmed before Madeleine disappeared on May 3. Affleck decided not to release the movie in the UK due to the similarities of the film and Madeleine’s case, transworldnews.com reported.
It would not be released to be “sensitive to the depth of feeling surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann", Affleck said. He said the box offfice losses were not important to him. “The movie is just a commercial matter, whereas this is a matter of life and death,” he said.

Sir Richard backin' `em...
Branson Gives $200K to McCanns' Defense
Sept. 16, 2007 - Richard Branson Donates Money to Help Fund McCanns' Defense; Suspicion Rises Around Kate and Gerry McCann in Daughter's Disappearance
Quote:
Despite the cloud of suspicion surrounding them after Portuguese authorities named them as suspects in the disappearance of their child, Kate and Gerry McCann continued their campaign to find their missing 4-year-old daughter, Madeleine, as they prayed in church Sunday morning.
During the weekend, Gerry McCann's brother, John McCann, announced the launch of a new ad campaign in Portugal, Spain and other parts of Europe. Authorities' recent suggestion that the McCanns may have killed Madeleine accidentally, has left the British couple in a difficult situation.
Defending the McCanns
In fact, the McCanns, whose daughter went missing on May 4 while on a family vacation in Portugal, now may be forced to sell their home in order to pay for legal fees. But the parents may get help from entrepreneur Richard Branson, who offered $200,000 for their defense fund.

Rumor vs. evidence in McCann case
Sept 13, 2007 - Did the Portuguese police botch the investigation or are the parents guilty?
Quote:
Dr. Kate McCann stared out of the window of the plane flying her, her husband, and two of their three children from Portugal to their home in Great Britain. According to the media, fellow passengers later that her expression indicated her sadness at having to leave Portugal without her precious daughter, Madeleine, while others cynically suggest she was happy to be escaping the pressures of being named as a police suspect in the disappearance of her daughter some four months ago.
One “investigative” tactic of the Portuguese police seems to be to leak information to the media in an attempt to put pressure on the McCanns and to suggest that the police were actually carrying out a professional investigation and not simply flailing their arms against two grieving parents, while they haven't targeted in the absence of other credible suspects. Media sources in both Portugal and Great Britain have reported that with the help and assistance of British police, something the Portuguese seemed to have resisted in the initial stage of this case, significant physical evidence has been found to link the McCanns, especially Kate, to the disappearance and believed death of Madeleine.
Their working theory
Police seem to have adopted a working theory that the McCanns, wanting to have a night out without being concerned with constantly caring for and checking on then 3-year-old Madeleine and her two-year-old twin brother and sister, intentionally sedated Madeleine with her subsequently expiring due to an overdose of sedative. Everything after her death, the police seem to suggest through tabloid leaks, was a massive cover-up on the level of the JFK murder or the downing of TWA 800, or so many other conspiracy theories.

No rush to judgement...
DNA in car could be from Maddie's siblings
September 19, 2007 - CRUCIAL DNA evidence found in the boot of the car hired by the parents of missing toddler Maddie McCann could be from dirty nappies from other children.
Kate and Gerry McCann have been questioned by Portuguese detectives following the discovery of evidence in the boot of their Renault hire car, but a source close to the parents has reportedly said it might not be Maddie’s DNA.
According to UK tabloid The Sun, the source said that dirty nappies from Maddie’s two younger siblings were hurriedly packed into the boot by the McCanns while moving from one apartment to another.
The source also said that the missing toddler’s sandals and some of her unwashed pyjamas were “chucked” into the car as well. It’s been reported that at least 30 people used the same vehicle before police searched it.
The source said that the evidence that saw Maddie’s parents become suspects may be flawed. “It’s clear multiple sources could have contaminated it.” Three Portuguese detectives arrived in Britain yesterday and have been expected to request British officers to question the McCanns.

'No more questions' for Maddie's parents
September 20, 2007 - PORTUGUESE prosecutors said overnight that the parents of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann did not need to be questioned again about the disappearance of their daughter last May.
Quote:
"New elements of proof - after interrogations on September 7 - have not gathered anything to justify new questioning, so it is not planned," said prosecutor general Luis Bilro Verao, quoted by LUSA news agency.
The prosecutor's office said police would continue the criminal investigation into Madeleine's disappearance and no lead would be neglected. Madeleine's parents vowed earlier to return to Portugal if asked, amid reports that Portuguese police were set to fly to Britain to question them over her disappearance.
In their first interview since returning to Britain on September 9, shortly after being named as formal suspects, Kate McCann insisted the couple had nothing to hide and could return to Portugal anyway.
The McCanns strongly deny any role in the disappearance of Madeleine, who was aged three when she vanished from a holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on May 3.

Angry maid took her...
Major development in Madeleine McCann case
Sunday 30th September, 2007 In a major development in the Madeleine McCann case, police have launched a search for a new suspect, an irate ex-employee, after receiving a tip-off from Prince Charles.
Quote:
An anonymous e-mail sent to the Prince's website says that the Brit toddler, who went missing during a family vacation in Portugal in May, was kidnapped by an angry ex-employee. The informer claimed that a maid sacked from the Mark Warner Ocean Club holiday resort kidnapped the three-year-old in a revenge plot.
The British police believe the tipster passed on the information to Prince Charles because he has been taking a personal interest in the case. The information has been passed onto Scotland Yard. Detectives are trying to trace the writer, and sources have revealed that the information seems to be accurate.
News of the World has quoted a source as saying the information is incredibly detailed and appears to be based on factual events. U.K officers who have been taking a back seat in the hunt for Madeleine will probably become more proactive after the new information was handed to them. The news has comes while Portuguese police are still considering the theory that the girl may have been accidentally by her mother.

Maybe a new cop will find the little girl...
New policeman on the McCann case
Tuesday 9th October, 2007 - Portuguese police have appointed a new head of their inquiry into the case of missing British girl Madeleine McCann.
Quote:
Veteran police officer Paulo Rebelo will replace Goncalo Amaral after Amaral was sacked last week for accusing British colleagues of siding with the girl's parents. Amaral also accused the McCanns of releasing false information in a bid to confuse the inquiry.
The personnel change comes five months after Madeleine disappeared from the family's hotel room while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were eating at a restaurant in the same complex. The girl's disappearance just before her fourth birthday sparked an international campaign to find her and a joint operation by British and Portuguese police.
Portuguese police last month named the parents as formal suspects, after questioning them separately for hours after receiving the results of forensic tests carried out at a laboratory in England. No charges have been filed against the couple, who strongly deny having played any role in their daughter's disappearance.

New witness steps forward...
New witness emerges in Madeleine case
Nov. 18, 2007 -- A witness in the Madeleine McCann case claims she saw a woman pass the missing girl to another man in central Portugal two days after the reported abduction.
Quote:
The witness claims she was suspicious when she saw a woman hand "a baby in a blanket" to a man days after the girl's disappearance, The Daily Mail reported Sunday. The exchange allegedly occurred 100 miles from the resort town of Praia da Luz where the McCann family was vacationing.
The two involved in the swap were later seen leaving the scene in separate vehicles. Neither was Portuguese, the witness said. Investigators claim they know the identity of the couple involved in the sighting and notified Portuguese detectives.
Officials believe the incident is linked to earlier witness testimony in which Jane Tanner claimed to see a man carrying a child she later believed to be Madeleine McCann. Madeleine McCann vanished from a vacation apartment May 3 in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Portugese AG kinda morbid...
'Publicity may have killed Maddie'
November 23, 2007 - "Natural" for kidnapper to kill Maddie; Parents still prime suspects, says police source
Quote:
MISSING British toddler Madeleine McCann is most likely dead largely due to the huge amount of publicity surrounding her disappearance, Portugal's attorney-general says. Attorney-General Fernando Pinto Monteiro told Portuguese magazine Visao that it would be "natural" for a kidnapper to kill the four-year-old. “There is a greater degree of probability of the little girl being dead than being alive," he said. “Would an abductor, with the whole world having Maddie’s photo, still demand a ransom?"
Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were “extremely distressed” by the comments. Their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, told The Sun newspaper that Mr Monteiro's comments were not helpful. “We still firmly believe that she is alive,” Mr Mitchell said. “From our point of view, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, the possibility that Madeleine is be held somewhere is still valid.”
A Portuguese newspaper has claimed that police are preparing to shut down their investigation into the toddler’s disappearance. A police source reportedly told 24 Horas newspaper that detectives were giving up on the search. “We are practically back where we started from,” the source said. “The parents are still the prime suspects in hiding their daughter’s body – not of her death, which was probably accidental. But there is not firm proof.”

Maddie gonna be home for Christmas?...
'I know where Maddie is'
December 14, 2007 - THE private investigator hired by the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann says he knows where she is, and that she will be home by Christmas.
Quote:
Director-general of Metodo 3, Francisco Marco, told Britain’s Daily Mail the missing four-year-old was kidnapped by a pedophile ring but she was still alive. "We know who kidnapped her. We believe she is in an area not very far from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. And we have a fairly certain idea of who she is with,” Mr Marco said.
"I cannot say who she is with because we are putting together conclusive proof we can present to the authorities so they can proceed with their arrests." "God willing, I hope she'll be back with her parents before Christmas."
In an interview with Spanish newspaper Metro, Mr Marco said he was certain Madeleine’s parents had nothing to do with her disappearance from the Ocean Club apartment complex in the Portuguese resort town of Praia da Luz in May. "You only have to spend five minutes with them to realise they've got nothing to do with this.

Don't guess she made it home for Christmas...
Reports: Madeleine's parents prime suspects
4 Jan. 2008 - Eight months after Madeleine's disappearance, parents are still suspects; Interim report contains theory that the couple accidentally killed her; Report part of prosecution's bid to extend suspect status of parents
Quote:
The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann have been named as prime suspects in the disappearance of their daughter, according to media reports. Eight months after four-year-old Madeleine vanished from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz, it has emerged that Portuguese detectives still believe they may have been responsible for their daughter's death.
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha says an interim report claiming the couple accidentally killed Madeleine is to be handed into the public prosecutor. The newspaper also says the couple could be charged with perjury and wasting police time. However, the police file is also reported to include the theory that Madeleine may have been abducted. The interim report is understood to be part of the prosecution's bid to extend the suspect status of both the McCanns and Robert Murat, the only other suspect.
Murat was named a suspect on May 14, and Portuguese police must charge him, release him or extend his status by January 14. Madeleine's disappearance on May 3 made headlines around the world. Her parents Kate and Gerry McCann say she disappeared from their hotel room at the resort while they dined in a nearby restaurant.
